Prince William Sound is a large body of sheltered water and part of the Gulf of Alaska. The sound is located on the eastern side of the Kenai Peninsula. Valdez is the largest seaport and the terminus of the Trans Alaska Pipeline. Prince William Sound is also the location of the 1989 Valdez Oil Spill that coated much of the pristine beaches and ocean bottom with toxic crude oil. Additionally there are some smaller towns and villages located on the sound including Cordova and Whittier. Tourists love the sound which contains many large and small islands and so much wildlife its hard to find the words to explain. Whale watching in Prince William Sound is just one of the attractions to this grand region of Alaska.
